Wazwan, the traditional Kashmiri feast, runs through dish after dish — rogan josh, yakhni, and a good half-dozen others — using spice combinations you genuinely won’t find anywhere else in the country. Then there’s the craft side: pashmina shawls, papier-mâché boxes, hand-knotted carpets, still made the old way by artisans in Srinagar’s old town. Even popping into a shop just to look ends up being a small history lesson, whether you buy anything or not. On the practical side, Delhi remains the easiest jumping-off point for Kashmir, with direct flights to Srinagar taking under two hours — you could genuinely be on a houseboat sipping kahwa the same afternoon you left home. Roads within the valley are decent between the main towns, though mountain weather has a mind of its own, so it helps to have a route planned with a little slack built in rather than a rigid hour-by-hour schedule. Families travelling with older parents or younger kids tend to benefit most from having things pre-arranged, since altitude and long drives are a lot easier when someone’s already figured out where to stop and rest. Couples and solo travellers get something different out of it — less time managing logistics, more time actually sitting by a lake or walking through a garden without checking a map every five minutes. Day 1 — Arrival in Srinagar, Houseboat Stay & Dal Lake Land in Srinagar and get settled into your houseboat by early afternoon. Once your bags are down, head out for a shikara ride on Dal Lake — past Nehru Park, the floating gardens, maybe a floating vegetable seller or two if the timing’s right. Evening’s yours to just sit on the houseboat deck with a cup of kahwa. Not a bad way to kick off a Delhi to Kashmir package, honestly.

Day 2 — Srinagar Sightseeing: Mughal Gardens & Old City Morning’s for the gardens — Nishat Bagh first, then Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi if time allows. After lunch, wander through Srinagar’s old city, stop at Hazratbal Shrine, and browse the local market for pashmina or saffron (bargaining is expected, so don’t accept the first price). Back to the houseboat for the night.

Day 3 — Srinagar to Gulmarg: Gondola & Meadows Head out early, it’s about ninety minutes to Gulmarg. Spend the day wandering the meadows, and if you’re up for it, take the Gondola cable car towards Apharwat Peak — the views up there are worth the queue. Return to Srinagar by evening.

Day 4 — Srinagar to Pahalgam: Betaab Valley & Lidder River Drive to Pahalgam, stopping along the way at Betaab Valley and Aru Valley — both thick with pine trees and cut through by clear little streams. Check into your hotel by the Lidder River, then just take it slow for the evening, maybe a walk along the riverbank. Overnight in Pahalgam.

Day 5 — Pahalgam to Srinagar: Departure Breakfast, then a relaxed drive back to Srinagar, with a bit of time for last-minute shopping if your flight timing works out. Transfer to the airport for your onward journey — trip done, though most people are already thinking about when they’ll come back.
