Day 1: Delhi to Kochi Catch a morning flight out of Delhi and land in Kochi by early afternoon. Check in, rest a bit, then head out towards evening for a walk around Fort Kochi. The old Chinese fishing nets and the Dutch-era lanes make for an easy first evening.

Day 2: Kochi to Munnar It’s a four to five hour drive up into the hills, with waterfalls and viewpoints breaking up the journey. By the time you check into a resort in Munnar, the temperature has usually dropped a good ten degrees from Kochi.

Day 3: Munnar Sightseeing A full day exploring tea estates, Eravikulam National Park (worth it just to spot the Nilgiri Tahr), and Mattupetty Dam. Most Delhi to Kerala holiday packages give Munnar a whole day for good reason — there’s simply too much packed into this one hill town to rush.

Day 4: Munnar to Thekkady About three hours on to Thekkady. In the afternoon there’s a boat ride on Periyar Lake through the wildlife sanctuary, where sightings of elephants and bison along the banks aren’t uncommon. If you’re up for it, add an evening spice plantation walk.

Day 5: Thekkady to Alleppey Drive to Alleppey and board a traditional houseboat for an overnight cruise on the backwaters. Meals are cooked fresh right there on board, and the best part of the day is just sitting on deck watching village life go by — kids waving from the banks, someone always washing clothes at a ghat.

Day 6: Alleppey to Kochi, Departure After breakfast, head back to Kochi for your flight home. If there’s time, a stop at a spice market or a small handicraft store is a nice way to close out the trip before heading to the airport.
