Best time to visit Goa: mid-November to mid-February, usually
In short: The best time to visit Goa is mid-November to mid-February, when it’s usually dry and comfortable. It’s also the busiest stretch. June to September brings over 90 per cent of the year’s rain.
You’ve got dates in mind, maybe a school break or a long weekend, and someone says “Goa in that month? It’ll be washed out” or “it’ll be packed”. Both can be true. Neither is a reason to cancel. The point is to pick the month knowing what you’re trading.
If you want the hotel, transfers and sightseeing sorted in one place, VeeTrips lists a Delhi-departure Goa package with the inclusions spelled out. Pick the month first, though. That’s what the rest of this page is for.
The year in one table
Here are Goa’s usual temperatures and rain, taken from Goa’s climate table. They’re averages. Any given week can run hotter, wetter or drier, and I won’t promise you a particular day.
Usual daily high, low and rain in Goa, selected months
| Month | Usual high (°C) | Usual low (°C) | Rain (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 31.6 | 19.6 | 0.2 |
| March | 32.0 | 23.2 | 1.2 |
| May | 33.0 | 26.3 | 112.7 |
| June | 30.3 | 24.7 | 868.2 |
| July | 28.9 | 24.1 | 994.8 |
| September | 29.5 | 23.8 | 251.9 |
| October | 31.6 | 23.8 | 124.8 |
| December | 32.4 | 20.6 | 16.7 |
Two things jump out. The highs barely move. The usual high runs from 28.8 °C in August to 33.0 °C in April and May, so temperature alone won’t tell you when to go. Rain does. January gets 0.2 mm. July gets 994.8 mm.
That gap is the whole story of Goa’s year. Everything else is detail.

Peak season, November to February
The best time is mid-November to mid-February, when the weather is comfortable, dry and pleasant. The peak season, with high prices, runs from November to late March.
This is the Goa on the posters. Rain is close to nothing: November averages 30.9 mm, December 16.7 mm, January 0.2 mm and February 0.1 mm. Nights are the coolest of the year, with December’s usual low at 20.6 °C and January’s at 19.6 °C. Days stay around 32 °C.
Swimming matters too. The safe swimming period in Goa is November to early May. Outside it, the advice is not to get in the water at all. So if you’re coming for the water, this is the window.
The cost is people. The last week of the year, between Christmas and New Year, is usually completely packed. If your dates are fixed to those days, book early and ask for the exact rate for your dates. I don’t have a dated source for hotel prices by month, so I won’t quote a number.
Mid-February also has Carnival. It’s a four-day event held just before Lent, with a big influx of visitors. That’s a good reason to go and a good reason to book transport early. The dates move each year, so check them closer to your trip.

March to May: warmer, quieter, and then hot
March looks like February with the volume turned down. It’s 32.0 °C by day with almost no rain (1.2 mm), and swimming is still safe. April is wetter in the table at 11.8 mm, but that’s still a few showers, not a season.
May is where the weather turns on you. May is usually the hottest month, with daytime temperatures of over 35 °C. Humidity can make summer afternoons feel like 48 °C. The table says the usual low in May is 26.3 °C, so the night doesn’t rescue you. Rain starts to creep in too: 112.7 mm, mostly ahead of the monsoon.
I’d call this the shoulder season. It suits you if you want fewer people and don’t mind spending midday in the pool or in an air-conditioned room. It doesn’t suit a first trip with grandparents, or anyone planning long walks.
Monsoon, June to September
Over 90 per cent of the average annual rainfall falls during the monsoon. You can see it in the table. June is 868.2 mm, July 994.8 mm, August 512.7 mm and September 251.9 mm.
So is Goa worth visiting then? It depends what you wanted from it.
What you lose: the beach huts are closed in the monsoon, and diving isn’t possible from June till mid-October. Swimming is outside the safe window. If your picture of Goa is a shack, a cold drink and a swim, this isn’t that trip.
What you get: a cooler, quieter Goa. The usual high drops to 28.9 °C in July and 28.8 °C in August, the lowest of the year, and the crowds thin out. Sightseeing that happens indoors or under a roof doesn’t care about rain. I’d say a monsoon trip booked on purpose, for rest, beats one you end up in by accident.
October is the in-between month. It’s 124.8 mm of rain, so showers are still likely, but the highs are back to 31.6 °C. Diving season starts from mid-October. Check what’s open before you book, and don’t plan the whole trip around a dry week. Nobody can promise one.
If you’re weighing it up in detail, we’ve written about what to check in a Goa package, and it’s worth asking any seller which activities are actually running in your month.

Every month in a line
The table above skips a few months, so here are all twelve, from the same figures. Usual high first, then rain.
- January: 31.6 °C, 0.2 mm. Dry, with cool nights (a usual low of 19.6 °C).
- February: 31.5 °C, 0.1 mm. The driest month, with Carnival in the middle of it.
- March: 32.0 °C, 1.2 mm. Still dry, getting warmer.
- April: 33.0 °C, 11.8 mm. Hot, with a few showers.
- May: 33.0 °C, 112.7 mm. The hottest and stickiest, and the rain begins.
- June: 30.3 °C, 868.2 mm. The monsoon arrives in earnest.
- July: 28.9 °C, 994.8 mm. The wettest month in the table.
- August: 28.8 °C, 512.7 mm. Still very wet.
- September: 29.5 °C, 251.9 mm. Easing.
- October: 31.6 °C, 124.8 mm. Showers, then drier.
- November: 32.8 °C, 30.9 mm. Mostly dry again.
- December: 32.4 °C, 16.7 mm. Dry, and the busiest of all by the last week.
Read the rain column first, then the dates you actually have. A month with 0.1 mm and a month with 994.8 mm are different holidays, even though the temperature barely changes.
Which month fits you
What you want, and the months that usually suit it
| What you want | Usual best months | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Beach days and swimming | Mid-November to mid-February | Busiest, and Christmas to New Year is packed |
| Fewer people, still dry | March | Hotter, around 32.0 °C |
| Cheaper and quieter | June to September | Beach huts closed, heavy rain, no safe swimming |
| Festivals and nightlife | Mid-February for Carnival; December for the holidays | Book early |
| Slow trip with parents | Mid-November to mid-February | Crowds; pick a quieter area |
If I had to choose for one person, it would be this. Travelling with parents or small children? Go in the dry stretch, and avoid the last week of December. Two friends on a long weekend who want a swim? Same window. A couple after quiet and green? Try June or September, and be honest about what will be shut.
Which side of Goa you stay on matters a bit more in the busy months. North Goa is usually busier and South Goa quieter, and we’ve gone deeper in our North vs South Goa guide.
A few things to do before you lock the dates
- Check the flight and hotel prices for two different months. Compare them line by line, not by headline.
- Ask what’s open in your month: beach huts, water sports, boat trips.
- If you’re coming in the monsoon, ask about flexible dates. Plans change.
- Pack for the season. Sunscreen for the dry months (temperatures in winter and summer can be extreme), and a light rain jacket in the wet ones.
We’re a single-owner agency in Dwarka, so if your dates have to move, you can call the office and speak to the person who handled the booking.
